How to Choose an International Program
Choosing the right program is critical to your success when
study abroad.
You
It begins with you. Have you traveled outside the United
States before? Where have you been? What did you enjoy? What was most
challenging? Would you like to go to a similar culture or try something
different?
Have you studied any languages other than English? How
comfortable are you with what you have studied? Have you traveled to countries
that speak the language you have studied? What was the experience like?
Do you enjoy trying different kinds of foods? Do you like to
meet people with different backgrounds? Does the idea of learning more about
another culture appeal to you?
Advisor
Talk to your advisor about what off-campus programs fit well
with your major and/or minors. Where have other students studied before and
what has been beneficial to them? Find out where studying off-campus fits into
the sequence of courses that you will be studying at Malone - when is the best
time for you to study away from Malone? Are there advance courses available
elsewhere that are not available on campus?
Faculty
Talk to faculty in your major and minor courses about
studying off-campus. Get ideas from them of locations and topics that might fit
your field well. Ask them if they lead any Malone summer trips that would be
good for you to join.
Students
Talk to upper class students about places they have studied.
Find out what options they considered and how they made their final decision.
What did they find most challenging and most enjoyable? How did their thinking
change about their field?
Family
Talk to your extended family. What experiences have they had
in studying elsewhere, vacationing overseas or traveling as part of their work
experience? What suggestions would they make and how do they offer to support
you in your endeavor?
