Why should I study abroad and off-campus?

It is an opportunity for:

  • Self-development - learn more about yourself and then develop more personal strength, self-confidence and independence through practice living in a new situation.
  • Cultural understanding and sensitivity – through immersion in another culture you will have opportunities to observe similarities and differences to your culture and way of life.
  • Expanding your world view – identify new ways of viewing your faith, your professional career and your role in the global community.
  • Seeing other parts of the US and world – travel beyond where you grew up and have spent most of your time to see and understand other ways of living, working and communicating.
  • Becoming more marketable – add an international experience to your skill set and your resume
  • Learning how to interact with diverse people – meet and work with a variety of people with different backgrounds, world views, languages and cultures.

When should I study abroad or off-campus?

The best time is second half of your sophomore year through the first half of your senior year. It will depend on your major and minor and courses you need at different times. Begin a conversation with your advisor, faculty in your major and minor fields and the office of Global and Off-Campus Programs your freshman year so you can sequence major and general education courses properly.

  

Where should I study abroad and off-campus?

The decision of where to study will depend on what courses you need to take and your level of comfort with different cultures and living situations. Malone has a set number of programs that we have investigated that meet our academic criteria’s. Look at the programs that are available on this site.

 

What courses will I take off-campus?

This depends on your major. There may be courses available off-campus that fill your major, minor, general education requirements or free electives. It is usually a combination that moves you toward graduation. The application process includes getting pre-approval for your courses. The specific web sites of the various programs will list specific courses available.

 

What does it cost to study off-campus?

The cost varies with the destination. For out of country locations you will need a passport, possibly shots and maybe a visa. You will need to cover your transportation costs to and from the location. The actual location costs are equal to Malone in some cases and cost more in other cases because of differences in the cost of living in different parts of the country and the world. At one point in the process you will visit our financial aid office and our business office to clarify the particular costs for you and the program you have chosen. Look at the “Resources” section of this site to find some additional financial aid options.

 

Who can study abroad and off-campus from Malone University?

All students are encouraged to study off-campus at some point in their academic career. Although the specifics will vary with the program, in general you will need a grade point average of at least 2.5 and not have any current academic, disciplinary or financial issues with the university.
